Supreme Court warns lawmakers that investigation can not be stopped

Colombia news - Supreme Court

Colombia's Supreme Court warned 86 Representatives of the House that the investigation for their allegedly illegal approval of the referendum that seeks the re-election of President Alvaro Uribe will be carried out, despite their calls to cancel it.

According to newspaper El Espectador, the Court sent a letter to the suspected lawmakers in which it explains that the preliminary investigationwill have to be carried out first, before the Court can decide whether to proceed to dropping the charges or proceed with an official investigation.

The Representatives were sued by an opposition colleague who claims the Congressmen committed a crime when they approved the re-election referendum while the Electoral Council was still investigating possible financial fraud in the organization of the popular vote.

The Representatives had asked the court not to intervene in the Congressional process and accuse the highest judicial body of trying to intimidate Congress.

The Court however decided to continue the investigation and that the research doen is "within legal terms."
