Cauca mayor fears for civilian population after FARC attack on Police

Colombia news - Buenos Aires

The Mayor of Buenos Aires, Cauca, said that he fears for the safety of the civilian population after a guerrilla attack on Police in a town nearby earlier this week.

On Monday, seven policemen and at least 20 guerrillas were killed after a guerrilla ambush killing seven policemen led to heavy battle near Jamundi, Valle del Cauca. The mayor told Caracol Radio that the situation in the region has been very tense after this fighting.

Mayor Urdelio Carabali is in Popayan, the department capital, to explain the difficult situation to the authorities and calls for an extraordinary security council in his jurisdiction.

The Mayor of Buenos Aires reiterated what the Governor of Cauca, Guillermo Alberto Gonzalez, had said; that guerrillas of the FARC teamed up with drug traffickers to carry out the attack on a Valle Police squadron.
