Government authorizes 7 new extraditions to US and Spain

The Colombian government authorized six extraditions to the U.S. and one to Spain for drug trafficking related charges.

The man who will be extradited to Spain Juan Enrique Castañeda Contento, has already been sentenced to 10 years in jail in that country for "criems against public health". He was arrested by DAS agents on October 28, 2008.

Since August 2002, when Colombian President Alvaro Uribe's first mandate began, more than 900 Colombians have been extradited to the U.S., almost all for drug trafficking related crimes.

Colombia's Interior and Justice Minister Fabio Valencia Cossio is in the U.S. this week to discuss with U.S. Prosecutor General Eric Holder "refining" the treaty on the extradition of Colombians to the U.S.
