Inspector General starts 'FARC-politics' investigation

Colombia news - Piedad Cordoba

Colombia's Prosecutor General started a preliminary investigation into the alleged ties of Piedad Cordoba and three other opposition Senators to the country's largest rebel group FARC.

The government says that e-mails of opposition Senators Piedad Cordoba, Gloria Ines Ramírez, Jorge Robledo and Wilson Borja were found on the computer of slain FARC commander 'Raul Reyes' and show how the lawmakers are collaborating with the Marxist rebels.

Prosecutor General Alejandro Ordoñez does not discard the possibility more lawmakers will be subjected to an investigation.

If the Inspector General comes to the conclusion that the opposition Senators went too far in their contacts with the FARC, he can suspend the lawmakers.

Colombia's Supreme Court of Justice is also investigating the Senators to see if there is enough evidence to start a penal investigation.
