Colombia is facing extreme rainfall and natural disasters due to climate change, deputy Environment Minister Claudia Mora warned Friday.
Although Colombia only produced 0.37 per cent of the greenhouse gases worldwide, it is going to be one of the Southern countries most affected by the climate change, the Ministry of the Environment announced.
Floods, droughts and epidemics of dengue and malaria for example will be the results of the climate change.
According to estimations, the Caribbean coast faces flooding of 4900 square kilometers and the Pacific coast 6400 square kilometers. 50 per cent of Colombia's glaciers have already melted in the last 50 years.
"The climate change is an irreversible fact and we have to adapt to it" Mora said.
At the end of the year there will be a meeting in Copenhagen to negotiate a new global agreement on the climate change. Colombia's authorities will call on the industrialized countries to help saving the rain forest and the biodiversity.
