Uribe not to compromise with FARC on hostage release

Colombia news - Alvaro Uribe

Colombia's President Alvaro Uribe ordered the army Thursday to continue with military operations to secure the release of all hostages, rejecting FARC leader Alfonso Cano's call to show more willingness to compromise.

"We will not be pressured by those who speak of a humanitarian agreement and then kidnap the councilor of Garzon the next day", Uribe said referring to Armando Acuña who got kidnapped by the FARC last Friday in Huila.

Uribe refuses to collaborate with the FARC and rejects the exchange of hostages for imprisoned guerrillas.

Families of hostages criticized the Colombian government for their strategy fearing that military operations endangers the lives of the hostages.

Cano said in a statement on the FARC website that President Alvaro Uribe's refusal to compromise is endangering the release of hostage Pablo Emilio Moncayo who was kidnapped 11 and a half years ago.

A deal with FARC would free the kidnappers in exchange for the liberation of the kidnapped; a humanitarian deal, a win-win, Cano suggest. The problem is that within a year, with more freed kidnappers, we will end up with a higher number of kidnapped, perhaps double what we have today. The only viable deal is the one where FARC disarms and gives up on kidnapping and other unlawful things. Of course, they can go into politics, perhaps like FMLN (El Salvador) and FLSL (Nicaragua) they can reach power through legal and popular means. But they will have to earn the votes.
