Colombia optimistic about improved relations between US and Cuba

Colombia news - Cuba OAS

Colombia's Foreign Minister Jaime Bermudez believes that relations between the United States and Cuba will improve now that the communist state is allowed to join the Organization of American States.

In an interview with W Radio, the Foreign Minister said "one would hope that this helps. if this agreement had not been reached, there would have been a far less favorable situation for bilateral progress. Now we have to see what these countries decide, but I believe it helps."

The U.S. Wednesday, pressured by Latin American countries in the inter-American organization, ended its decades-long resistance against the joining of communist Cuba, but stressed that democratic change was needed for the Caribbean island to join.

Cuba's former President Fidel Castro was now impressed with the decision of the OAS however. According to Castro, the OAS had "opened the doors to the Trojan horse" [the U.S.] to wreak havoc in Latin America.

Colombia's Foreign Minister remains hopeful, saying that there has not yet been an official reaction to the decision coming from Havana.
