FARC announce armed strike in Arauca

Colombia news - armed strike

Suspected FARC guerrillas set up road blocks in the eastern department of Arauca and distributed a communique announcing an armed strike to drivers.

Truck drivers were threatened that their vehicles would be burned if they appeared on the road.

The campaign began last Tuesday, two days after two electricity towers, which had been bombed leaving locals without electricity for a week, were repaired.

This is the second armed strike to be announced this year. The first ran from March 15 to 31. According to El Tiempo, the strike led to a 70 percent decrease in traffic in the department during the period and a loss of 1.5 billion pesos in the transport sector.

The army announced it will install control points at key areas in the department.

Despite the instability in the region, authorities insisted that elections for the governor of Arauca will go ahead as planned on Sunday.
