Opposition leaders to discuss joining forces

Colombia news - two gavirias

The leaders of Polo Democratico and the Liberal Party will meet Thursday afternoon to discuss the possibility of joining forces to stop the second re-election of Colombia's President Alvaro Uribe.

Polo Democratico leader Carlos Gaviria and his Liberal Party counterpart Cesar Gaviria will explore the idea of their parties banding together to present one presidential candidate. They would do so in the hope that by combining their constituency they can defeat Uribe at the polls.

Although Carlos Gaviria has said numerous times that he is opposed to the idea, El Espectador believes that faced with the alternative of another term under Uribe, he may change his mind.

Polo Democratico member and former Bogota mayor Lucho Garzón told El Espectador he thought the meeting between the two Gavirias was "a step in the right direction".
