Colombia police on highest alert for FARC attacks

Colombia news - Orlando Paez

Colombia's security forces are on their highest alert in anticipation of the upcoming 45th anniversary of the FARC. This weekend, guerrillas killed ten policemen and soldiers.

According to Orlando Paez, director of the Police's Public Safety bureau, authorities are "on maximum alert considering that this month the 45th anniversary of this group is celebrated." The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) officially were formed on May 27.

Authorities say the FARC carried out several attacks over the weekend in a number of departments of the country and the Police is expecting more show of force for the guerrillas.

The FARC, Latin America's oldest active leftist guerrilla group, were formed on May 27, 1964 by Marxist peasants who wanted to overthrow the then Conservative government. The guerrilla group is considered a terrorist organization by the U.S. and the E.U. and accused by numerous human rights organizations of violating human rights.
