Uribe re-election vote delayed

Colombia news - Senate

The coalition in Colombia's Senate did not put the re-election referendum up for vote Wednesday, when it was obvious it couldn't get the number of votes necessary to pass.

A number of coalition senators say they were prevented to vote, because of personal interests and the opposition was voting against the initiative as a whole. This left the coalition without the 52 votes necessary to have the bill passed that is to call for a second referendum about the possible third term of President Alvaro Uribe.

The government and coalition will now try to convince those senators who say they can not vote to vote in favor for the bill anyway.
