Uribe still favorite for 2010 elections

Colombia news - Gallup poll

Colombian President Alvaro Uribe has the most chance of winning the 2010 presidential elections if he decides to compete, the latest Gallup poll shows.

The poll does indicate a slow, but steady decrease in the popularity of the President, but of all possible candidates he still has by far the biggest support. If Uribe decides not to run for his therd consecutive term, Defense Minister Juan Manuel Santos and former Medellín mayor Sergio Fajardo would make the most chance to make it into the Casa de Nariño.

Uribe's approval rating went down to 71 percent, three percentage points lower than half a year ago. The approval of the government's fight against corruption saw a sharper drop; 51 percent of the Colombians approves of the government's efforts to eradicate corruption.

68 percent of the Colombians agree with how human rights are defended in their country.

The country's economy is what worries Colombians the most; only 9 percent of the Colombian people are positive about where the conomy is going. 81 percent  expects a deterioration.
