8 soldiers arrested for Soacha 'false positives'

Colombia news - False positive victim

Colombian authorities arrested eight soldiers who are suspected of having murdered eight civilians in Ocaña to make them appear to be guerrillas killed in combat.

The young men had all disappeared from Soacha, a town close to Colombia's capital Bogotá and were found in massgraves in Ocaña, close to the Venezuelan border, where they had been dumped after having been registered as guerrillas killed in combat.

The arrested soldiers all were stationed in Ocaña where the murders allegedly took place.

The soldiers are accused of aggravated forced displacement, aggravated homicide and conspiracy, sources in the Prosecutor General's Office told newspaper El Espectador.

Recently, one soldier and one civilian were arrested in Soacha, suspected of the kidnapping of the eleven victims.

The 'false positives' scandal forced the military to sack 27 officials, including three generals. Media say the PG is currently investigating 1,300 possible cases of 'false positives'.
