Uribe rejects political involvement in hostage releases

Colombia news - Alvaro Uribe

Colombian President Álvaro Uribe did not literally speak of opposition senator and mediator Piedad Cordoba, but said Saturday no politicians may take part in the expected release operation of FARC hostage Pablo Emilio Moncayo.

Uribe allows the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Catholic Church to take part in the humanitarian mission, but will not allow "that the FARC, under the appearance of humanitarian grounds gives impunity to people who belong in jai, because they are elements of FARC-politics."

Cordoba, opposition Senator and chairman of civil action group 'Colombians for Peace' has repeatedly been accused by the government of having ties with the Marxist guerrillas.

She recently accused the Government of "autistic behavior" in the process that should lead to the seventh liberation of a FARC hostage this year.

Uribe said he will not be blackmailed by the FARC, not accept them to put up a smokescreen and is ready to face international pressure to forbid any other involvement in possibel liberations.
