Medellin motorbike restrictions to be reviewed

Colombia news - Medellin

The Security Council will review current restrictions in Medellin that prohibit motorbike riders from carrying a passenger.

A three month extension of the restriction on carrying weapons was approved Monday.

Medellín imposed emergency security measures as tensions between illegal armed groups due to a sharp increase in violence and a soaring murder rate.

The metropolitan police announced that cases of theft have dropped by 50%. Police attribute this decrease to the restrictions imposed.

It is expected that the current motorbike restrictions will be permanently approved.

The Security Council also decided to lift restrictions on opening hours of establishments that sell alcohol in certain zones of Medellín.

Meanwhile, homicide in Medellín has reportedly increased by 30%. The Security Council will meet Friday to discuss measures to remedy the situation.
