800 tons of cocaine confiscated over 11 years

Anti-narcotics police announced that 800 tons of cocaine were confiscated and 455,000 people detained in relation to drug related crime over the last 11 years in Colombia.

Head of the Anti-narcotics police Álvaro Caro, also said that 1.5 million hectares of coca plants and 38,864 hectares of poppy plants (used to make heroin) had been destroyed over the same time period.

8,482 processing labs, 94,000 tons of chemicals, 6,250 firearms, 453 airplanes and helicopters and 2,705 boats were also seized over 11 years.

Of the people detained, 1,185 were foreigners and 624 were extradited to the U.S.

"If it weren't for our work, Colombia would have more than a million hectares of 'narco-cultivation' and our country would be govened by drug traffickers," said Caro.
