ELN asks FARC for ceasefire

The ELN asked the FARC for a peace agreement to put an end to the ‘deep crisis’ affecting four regions of the country.

In a statement released earlier this week on their web site, the ELN, the second-largest leftist guerrilla group in Colombia, said, “We have always acted with the goal of reaching a type of popular revolutionary agreement so that the majority can triumph in Colombia, which is why it is not national or regional policy to carry out these aggressions against the revolutionary forces or against the population.”

The central command acknowledged the military conflicts with the FARC being carried out in Antioquia, Arauca, Cauca, and Nariño since 2006 require dialogue in which both organizations evaluate their role in the situation.

It called for a different type of action to energize and coincide with the social, political, and military fight against the hostile regime of President Uribe. Such action must “give way to changes that all Colombians long for and that is being put together in the foundations of our America.”

The ELN asked the FARC to continue to improving relations in their respective areas with the means of strengthening revolutionary efforts.
