FARC bought off 50 Ecuadorian officials: Commission

Colombia news - Flag Ecuador

FARC guerrillas infiltrated Ecuadorian military institutions as well as government and security organizations, according to an Ecuadorian anti-corruption commission, headed by retired Ecuadorian army colonel Patricio Haro.

A document released by the commission revealed that 50 members of the Ecuadorian armed forces and national police were bought by the FARC.

Colonel Haro stated that the infiltration of Ecuadorian forces by Colombian guerrillas began nine years ago. He said there was photographic evidence of FARC infiltration of government bodies, trade union and human rights organizations

The ex army officer also said that a FARC boss of finances had paid US$15,000 to a military judge and US$5,000 to a prosecutor in order to have an investigation into arms smuggling by the guerrilla group shelved.

Haro claimed that there are Ecuadorian insurgent groups that provide the FARC with logistical support.
