Obama will not meet with Uribe

Colombia news - Alvaro Uribe Barack Obama

Colombia President Álvaro Uribe will not meet with his U.S. counterpart Barack Obama during the Americas summit in Trinidad & Tobago, despite efforts by the Colombian government to organize a meeting between two Heads of State.

According to Colombian media, the U.S. President's Press Secretary communicated that Obama will not have any bilateral meetings on the side during the summit.

The Colombian government had said earlier this week there would be a meeting and representatives of the two governments only needed to determine the time.

The only oppurtunity that is left for Uribe to talk to Obama during the summit, is to informally approach him before or after one of the meetings.

The Uribe administration had close ties with the former U.S. administration under President George W. Bush, but has found itself severely criticized for human rights abuses and labor rights by the current Presidency.
