Meeting at a summit in Cartagena, Latin America's richest businessmen
agreed to confront the current global economic crisis by cutting costs without
laying off employees.
The summit, called to discuss the impact of the crisis on the region and how to best handle it, began Monday.
Attending the 'Fathers and Sons Meeting', Mexican magnate Olegario Vásquez Araña said that businesses should strive to retain employees so that people could put food on the table.
Colombian banker billionaire Luis Carlos Sarmiento Angulo concurred, stating that not one employee from any of his businesses had been dismissed to date.
President Álvaro Uribe met with the magnates Tuesday and urged them to invest in Colombia.
"Please believe in Colombia, invest and help to generate employment," he said.
