Chavistas want candidate for Colombian presidential elections

Colombian supporters of Venzuelan President Hugo Chávez' Bolivarian revolution are preparing to launch their own candidate for the 2010 presidential elections.

Members of the Bolivarian Social Movement of Colombia are trying to gather the necessary 356,000 signatures needed to be able to present their own Bolivarian candidate, the movement's chairman, David Corredor told French press agency AFP.

"We have seen that in Colombia there is a favorable space for what President Chávez has done in Venezuela and to do the same here in terms of restoring the country's sovereignty and integrity," Corredor said.

The movement wants to do a national tour to promote their Bolivarian ideas and gather the signatures they need.

The tour starts in Cúcuta on the Venezuelan border and will cover 10 Colombian cities, the organization announced.
