Obama appoints Colombian as Hispanic media coordinator

Colombian-born Luis Miranda was appointed Director of Hispanic Media by U.S. President Barack Obama.

The former journalist will be in charge of the contact between the White House and the Spanish-language media and community in the U.S.

"I intend to create a better approach between the administration and the Hispanic community to communicate what we do and what we want to do," Miranda told news agency AP.

It's the first time a U.S. president appoints someone to deal specifically with Spanish-language media.

Obama received strong support from the Latino community in the U.S. in the last elections. Miranda was actively involved in the campaign that led to Obama's election victory.
