Indigenous Awá will look for massacre victims themselves

colombia news - awa massacre

Indigenous Awá spokesmen warned the FARC Monday that if the rebels do not surrender the bodies they murdered nearly two weeks ago, the indigenous will start looking for them themselves.

The FARC claimed responsibility for the deaths of eight members of the Awá people at the beginning of this month, alleging the victims admitted to be army informers. The Awá themselves say the FARC killed 27 of their people.

Oscar Ortiz, Spokesman of the Indigenous Unit of Awá Peoples (UNIP)  told W Radio that if the FARC does not hand over the bodies of those they killed, the indigenous will go to the area where the victims are suspected to be and, disregarding the risks and without any safety guarantee, will look for the bodies themselves.

According to Ortiz, he has received offers from indigenous leaders from Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru and even Central America to help look for the victims.
