If coalition won't find candidate, Uribe will go for third term

If the governing coalition isn't able to find one candidate for the 2010 presidential elections to continue the Democratic Security policy, Colombian President Álvaro Uribe will run for the presidency himself, he said Thursday.

"The President said he is not too keen on the re-election, but he will not be irresponsible with the country, facing a request of five million people," Senator Armando Benedetti said, referring to the referendum signed by millions of Colombians that want Uribe to be re-elected.

The Uribista coalition is currently trying to have an multi-partisan meeting to seek a single candidate for the next presidential election, but is confronted with the individual ambitions of some and the unconditional support for Uribe's re-election of others.

Congress will continue debating the re-election of the President in March. The possibility for the President to be re-elected in 2010 was sunk in earlier votes about the referendum, but supporters of Uribe, to the dismay of the coalition, say it can be revived again.
