Referendum organizers charged with fraud

The organizers of the referendum that was to help Colombian President Álvaro Uribe to his third term are to appear in court on fraud charges, sources within the Prosecutor General's office announced.

The promoters of the popular vote are suspected of having falsely informed the Electoral Council about the funding of the project, W Radio reported Monday.

Strangely, the Prosecutor that filed the charges on February 5 was released from his duty the day after filing charges and was replaced by a colleague.

The referendum came under scrutiny after first news broke that it had been sponsored by a daughter company of suspected money laundered DMG and the commission organizing the referendum could not clarify where the referendum's largest sponsor, a mysterious foundation, got the money from.

Former Congressman Luis Guillermo Giraldo, one of the organizers of the referendum said he know nothing of a criminal investigation and said he was confident the referendum could be continued its approval process in Congress.
