Polo wants ministers investigated for referendum lobby

Colombian opposition party Polo Democrático wants the Attorney General's Office to investigate Interior and Justice Minister Fabio Valencia Cossio and Social Welfare Minister Diego Palacio for allegedly lobbying Congress to approve a referendum held on President Álvaro Uribe's re-election.

The deal reportedly took place during an extra-ordinary congressional session called by the Executive when Congress wasn't able to approve the referendum under a deadline that would sink the President's possibilities for re-election.

Polo Representative Germán Reyes told newspaper El Espectador the ministers' lobby was "disgraceful and unprecedented."

However, Reyes didn't say how the ministers and two other high government officials had crossed the line, but assured that "tomorrow I will be at the Attorney General asking to open a preliminary investigation."

The opposition representative says to have photos, video and audio to prove the wrongdoings of the ministers.

The possible re-election of Uribe is still pending in Congress.
