Medellin landslide kills at least one; 12 missing

A landslide in in the south of Medellín killed at least one person Sunday. At least twelve are still missing, after some 68 thousand cubic meters of earth and rock took six houses on its way down.

Rescue workers say four houses are completely buried under the mud and rocks. The families are still inside those houses.

Medellín mayor Alonso Salazar said that there was no chance of people surviving, because of the size of the avalanche.

Continuous rains are hampering rescue activities.

Earlier this weekend floods and landslides already cost the lives of three in the department of Tolima. The second rainy season this year has forced 600,000 people from their home already.

It's the second time this year a landslide of this size takes lives in Medellín.  A landslide in May killed 28 people in Colombia's second largest city.
