1262 Colombian children adopted by foreign couples

Foreign couples have adopted 1262 Colombian children so far this year. 60 percent of Colombian children who are given up for adoption end up in foreign families, the Colombian Family Welfare Institute (ICBF) announced Tuesday.

The institute said in total, 2093 children were adopted in the first three quarters of the year.

Italian couples adopt the most Colombian children. They have taken the responsibility of raising 354 children. French couples have adopted 249 children en U.S. couples adopted 215.

The number of adoptees seems to be lower than in 2007 when 3077 Colombian children were adopted, a Colombian record.
