Indigenous leaders halted the march from Cauca to Cali after two farmers got killed in clashed with police on the road ahead of the march.
The thousands of protesters won't go further than Santander de Quillichao where they arrived after the first day walking.
"We will wait here until the indigenous from Cauca and Nariño and women's rights groups have arrived to join the march. We wil then review what happened with the deaths of these two people," Aída Quilcue, one of the leaders of the demonstration told Caracol Radio.
According to newspaper El Espectador, some 500 farmers, including indigenous, tried blocking the Panamerican highway passing through the village of Villa Rica, Cauca. Two farmers were killed in clashes with riot police.
Police say the two died when a handmade explosive one of them was carrying went off. Five others were reported injured.
