New strike begins

Just days after the conclusion of the 44-day judicial strike, National Registry workers have begun an indefinite walk out to protest lack of overtime pay during election cycles.

Approximately 3,600 workers of the National Registry’s Workers Syndicate ceased work Friday morning, reported Spanish press agency EFE.

The Registry is responsible for storing and providing data about id cards, civil records and marriages. The demanded additional payments would total almost US$3.33 million.

The new strike comes ten days before the internal consultation, or candidate selection, of the leading parties, but is not anticipated to affect them.

“The Government and the Finance Minister don’t want to solve the problem of the workers of the Registry,” said Daniel Bohórquez, president of the union.
