Colombia gives FARC one year deadline to join peace process

Colombian rebel group FARC has one year to start peace talks with the Colombian government. After November 2009 members of the FARC can no longer count on mild treatment by the Colombian Government.

The International Criminal Court in The Hague will then be taking over trials against members of the FARC, the government announced.

Colombia's High Commissioner of Peace Luis Carlos Retrepo says the statute of Rome, an international agreement that allows the ICC to deal with crimes against humanity, will be taking over cases against teh guerrillas, making possible deals of the Colombian government impossible.

According to the high official, the door is open for the FARC to negotiate peace with the government it has been fighting for 44 years.
