Uribe boycotts Andean summit

Colombian President Álvaro Uribe will not visit the Andean Community of Nation (CAN) summit next October 14 in Ecuador, because of the still strain relations with the host.

The two countries have cut relations after the Colombian army attacked a FARC camp on Ecuadorean territory, killing FARC commander Raúl Reyes and 25 others.

Uribe says Ecuador fails to "provide the appropriate conditions" to allow Uribe to attend the summit.

The future of the CAN is under pressure, because of the ideological differences between the remaining four participating countries. Colombia and Peru have been trying to make a trade deal with the European Union, because of the difficult cooperation with Bolivia and Ecuador, who ideologically allign with Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez.
