Córdoba: New FARC strategy is diversion

Colombian opposition senator Piedad Córdoba says the documents and e-mails supposedly of rebel leader Alfonso Cano, describing a new strategy for the FARC, are a way to divert attention from the scandals that hit the Colombian government recently.

The senator is named in the 14-points plan of the highest FARC leader. She is to form a broad people's party and seek alliance with the Bolivarian Movement, allegedly led by the FARC.

According to the Liberal Party senator, the government is merely trying to divert attention from "the very serious scandals related to the government," referring to the arrest of the brother of Justice Minister Fabio Valencia Cossio and the suspected army involvement in the deaths of 46 people that disappeared.

Newspaper El Espectador Sunday published parts of the documents tying not only Córdoba, but also the Venezuelan government to the FARC. Army general Freddy Padilla told Colombian media in reaction to the publication the FARC had never been weaker.
