Government opposes cell phones for inmates

Colombia's Interior and Justice Minister Fabio Valencia Cossio is against allowing prisoners to have internet and cell phones like new prison director Evelio Henao proposed.

"Like the country knows, mobile communication devices like cell phones have been used by criminals to continue their criminal activity from within their jail cell," the Minister said Friday in a press release.

The Minister added that INPEC's new director's idea "isn't part of the prison system reform the Government proposed."

Henao had proposed allowing cell phones and internet connections, because -- through corrupt prison guards -- prisoners already have access to these means of communication. Allowing it would decrease the corruption within the system, the prison director said.
