Colombia news - Armando Acuña

Armando Acuña, 48 years old, was kidnapped by the FARC on May 29, 2009, while serving as a councilman for the town of Garzon in the southwest Colombian department of Huila. He is due to be released on Friday.

Acuña, a member of the Conservative Party, was the only one taken when 10 FARC guerrillas entered the courthouse where he was working. A security official from that institution and two of the mayor's security guards were killed during the kidnapping.

Acuña is married and has three children, one girl aged 22 and two boys aged 14 and 16. He has been married to Nubia Segura for 22 years.

Speaking to El Tiempo in January, Segura said she believes her husband will return, "grayer and thinner but more spiritual and home-loving."

She added that if he wants to continue in politics, he will have the full support of his family, as she knows how important involvement and leadership in the local community is to him.

Acuña has been on the city council for five consecutive terms and also had a seat for three months in the the Huila department Assembly.

"Before politics, Armando is an excellent person, community leader and tireless worker. Gazon and its people need him back soon," a close friend said.
