September sugar exports more than double

Colombia news - Sugar cane

Colombian sugar exports in September more than doubled to 112,667 metric tons mixed raw and refined value, the Colombian Cane Sugar Producers Association, or Asocaña, said Wednesday.

This is an improvement from total Colombian sugar exports of 49,587 tons in the year-ago period, according to the group's first preliminary results. Dow Jones Newswires saw a copy of Asocaña's report.

Total Colombian sugar exports in the first nine months of the year, meanwhile, were up 66% to 660,481 tons from 397,049 tons last year, Asocaña said in the report.

Colombia is one of only a handful of countries that harvests and produces sugar all 12 months of the year, owing to favorable micro-climates and constant rainfall.
