World famous tenor Placido Domingo supports Colombian singer Juanes' decision to play in Cuba, the tenor said Cartagena Thursday.
"I believe that Juanes took a very positive decision," the Spanish tenor told reporters.
Placido Domingo, who will give a concert in Colombia's most famous tourist city Saturday, said he understands Cuban Americans' contradictory reactions, but "so much time has passed and I believe it is time we all cooperate ... and we can perform before them [the Cubans] like Juanes will."
Juanes received fierce criticism from Cuban exiles over his Havana concert and even reported having received death threats. Juanes, who claims the concert is apolitical, said he will perform in Cuba despite the controversy.

... Thank you Placido for not only bringing your elegance and talent to Colombia, but for also speaking some truth to these lunatics who are still obsessed with keeping a small island isolated from the world. Try as they might, history moves forward, the Cuban Revolution happened, live with it, more freedom will only come to Cuba through actions like what Juanes is doing: Opening doors, exchanging culture. |

... Andrewmann, This is a peace concert--not a freedom concert. If it were a freedom concert, it could not be held in Cuba. Cuba is a very peaceful country; however, there is NO freedom. Also, people who oppose the concert are not "lunatics;" they just do not think it is a good idea for Juanes to lend his fame and prestige to buttress a totalitarian dictatorship. |

... hmd2010, I agree Cuba needs more freedoms BUT those complaining about the concert are just empty vessels with a hypocritical agenda. Why doesn't anyone protest when Juanes holds concerts in countries like Mexico, Peru, Guatemala etc., which have worse human rights records than Cuba? The theme of Juanes' concert is very fitting because although Cuba itself is peaceful, regional right-wing, agenda-driven groups continue to wage a very violent, savage campaign against the island. |

... Andrewmann, The concerts in Mexico, Peru and Guatemala were commercial ventures. If Juanes had simply announced that he was going to do a concert in Cuba, there would not have been such an outcry. He has inserted himself in the political process through these Peace Concerts. There is peace in Cuba because dissent is brutally repressed. He is either incredibly naive about what is going on in Cuba or he supports totalitarian dictatorships in order to maintain peace. Neither option portrays him in a favorable light to those who oppose totalitarian dictatorships, and hence the problem with this Peace Concert in Havana. |

... On the contrary, Juanes is a major world music figure. He could have removed the name of the show and it would still have generated immense controversy from the right-wing. Shakira could say she's just going to Cuba to shake her hips and the Miami crowd would go nuts trying to shred her image. That's just the way it works in the real world. Its like Obama. They scream at him from Miami for shaking hands with Chavez, but nobody cared that he hosted the brutal dictator of Egypt in the White House. |

... The problem is that this is not a commercial venture. Juanes is paying for the concert and hence lending his name and prestige to buttress a brutal totalitarian dictatorship. Shakira knows better than to get herself caught up in this political maelstrom. This concert has turned into a public relations disaster for Juanes, and has brought him and the Miami community, which is where he lives, no peace. |

Let the Island have some FUN and you'll never know, something GOOD is coming out of all this.....you'll see. Juanes is an Artist NOT a POLITICAL OBJECT !!!! |

... it's all very well thanking Placido for his elegance and charm in his support of the Juanes Cuban concert, but you notice he made no comment about doing more than making cute pronouncements... like going to Cuba himself. Juanes is not the only international artist to go there, come Cuban friends told me that Claudio Abbado took the European Youth Orchestra there a couple of years ago and they were enthusiastically received. Artists are SUPPOSED to transcend borders and political agendas through their Art. Verbal support from heavyweights like the Maestro sound hollow when all he has to do is go there and use his art to show his support! |
