Colombian pop star Shakira returned to her home town of Barranquilla Tuesday to inaugurate a school that was funded by her 'Pies Descalzos' foundation.
The pop idol said she was part of a generation of artists that no longer tolerates injustice and inequality and that she wants to do something for the people living where she grew up.
"This institution is a reflection of what we want to propose. Therefore I believe that society should ask its government to invest in education. A big part of why I am here is to draw attention to the issue of education," Shakira said during the opening.
The school, located in one of the coastal regions poorest areas, will focus on bilingual and art education for the poor students.

... The true hero! As amazing as it might appear, this rock start has been the stone on the desert that has shinned while the world has its own problems. What amazed me the most is that people like Shakira have the power to emerge and to change our society, just by singing to love, dreams, and hope. She is my true Colombian hero, who silently has done this and a lot more now and in the past. Just last year alone I read that she was giving out of her Pies Descalzos foundation, more than 40 million dollars to Central America, for Nicaragua, and I think Guatemala. I can proudly say that she really represents what most of our Colombian values and dignity emanates from our hearts, passion, toughness, and courage, while mixing them with kindness and care. There would not be enough words to describe what she has done, what she has been doing and what she will be doing, as her passion and fight for those who have not opportunities and are powerless in life. Those who have seen her as the light at the end of tunnel that shine as hope outburst from all our hearts, and those who have never left their souls to be defeated by the madness that we all have witnessed, for all of them I say thanks Shakira for your beautiful, and powerful stone that has not overlooked the problems that has brought darkness to our world.
